Check a UK vehicle’s tax and MOT
Enter a registration number to see whether a vehicle is taxed and has a valid MOT, and the dates the DVLA holds for each. You also see the rest of its DVLA record, such as make, colour, fuel type, engine size, CO₂ emissions, when it was first registered, when its logbook (V5C) was last issued and whether it is marked for export.
Reading a result
Each result shows the vehicle’s tax and MOT status alongside its DVLA record. These are the values that are easiest to misread.
Tax status
- Taxed
- The vehicle is taxed. The result shows when tax is next due.
- Untaxed
- The tax has run out or has not been paid. The vehicle must not be used or kept on a public road until it is taxed.
- SORN
- The keeper has declared the vehicle off the road with a Statutory Off Road Notification. It is not taxed and must be kept off public roads.
MOT status
- Valid
- The vehicle has a current MOT. The result shows when it expires.
- Not valid
- There is no current MOT. Where the DVLA holds a date, the result shows when the last one expired.
- No details held
- The DVLA holds no MOT record. This is common for newer vehicles, which usually need a first MOT at 3 years old (4 in Northern Ireland).
Logbook and export
- Last V5C issued
- The date the DVLA last issued the vehicle’s logbook. A new one is issued when the keeper or recorded details change, or when a logbook is replaced, so a recent date is worth asking the seller about.
- Marked for export
- “Yes” means the DVLA has been told the vehicle is being exported permanently.

Common questions
Why did my check fail?
Usually the registration was mistyped (0 and O are easy to mix up), the DVLA has no vehicle under it, you have reached your daily limit, or the DVLA service did not respond. Check the registration and try again, or wait until midnight UTC if you have reached the limit.
Why might a result be out of date?
Quick-Reg keeps a DVLA result for up to 24 hours after a registration is checked, so a change such as renewing the tax can take up to a day to appear here.
Can it tell me if a vehicle is stolen, written off or has finance owing?
No. None of that is in the DVLA record, so you would need a separate vehicle history check.
Will the keeper know I checked their vehicle?
No. Quick-Reg sends only the registration number to the DVLA, with none of your details, and does not contact the vehicle’s keeper.
Who can see the registrations I check?
Your recent searches are saved in this browser only, and you can clear them. Each successful check also adds one to that registration’s count on Top searches, which lists registrations and counts but not who checked them.
